There is only limited knowledge about the pollutants that leach out of building materials used for new constructions in urban and redevelopment areas. These substances can potentially lead to concentrations, which exceed environmental quality standards in urban soils and urban-influenced waters and groundwater. In order to provide all stakeholders involved in the planning and construction of new buildings with valuable knowledge on how to protect the environment, the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) commissioned the "BaSaR" project. Kompetenzzentrum Wasser Berlin gGmbH, Berliner Wasserbetriebe and OST, Ostschweizer Fachhochschule, collected and evaluated data and derived recommendations for two new construction areas in Berlin over a period of two years. Using a combination of laboratory tests and field tests, they clarified which building products lead to the release of environmentally relevant substances.
